So, this is my first real attempt. Not a fake , "oh i am going to use lines and keep it looking cartoony" attempt. I finally got tired of looking at hours of video, reading my 3rd book on digital painting and decided to just jump into the deep end and see what I could do if I REALLY tried. Now of course, I am not a speed demon at this style, so this took me 5 hours! Some of that was my tablet going in and out on me since my new replacement tablet has not yet arrived.

Caveats: While I understand there are a ton of brushes and textures out there for Photoshop, I did not use Photoshop. I used SAI and as far as I saw, there are like 5 brushes and maybe 12 textures for SAI and I decided not to get them because none of them looked like something I would use, at least not yet. Maybe when i get better. So this pretty pathetic attempt at digital painting was done by using the brush tool set to maximum hardness and crispness. All on one layer and I started with mid tones. Also, I included the incredibly loose and rough thumbnail that i used to make this litmus test of my skill with digital painting.

Please let me know what you think I can improve on, what areas I need to concentrate on, what approaches you think i did that were wrong or good. Thanks!

okay, now make a new layer and set the layer to hard light, take a darker color, and practice drawing cast shadows. design is nice, now you need to have fun with using the layers, that is , i am assuming it was made in photoshop!

It's wasn't, but I can't import it's to Photoshop! Thank you! I will do that. This really is a great learning experience. I appreciate the advice.
